Understanding Termination Status in TeamOhana with BambooHR

Last updated: November 13, 2025

Overview

When integrating with BambooHR, TeamOhana displays an employee’s status based on the data received from BambooHR’s API. Sometimes, an employee may show a termination date but still appear as “Active.” This behavior is determined by BambooHR and is not an issue with TeamOhana.

Why this happens
BambooHR allows customers to set an effective termination date when ending an employee’s employment. The system will reflect the employee as active until the end of the effective date:

  • Future-dated termination: The employee remains active until 11:59 PM in the company’s timezone on the effective date.

  • Same-day termination: If you mark the employee with a termination date on the same day as the termination, then the employee becomes immediately inactive and the API would show inactive on the same day.

Key points:

  • TeamOhana reflects the status exactly as provided by BambooHR’s API.

  • A mismatch between the termination date and active/inactive status usually indicates how the termination was entered in BambooHR.

Recommended actions:

  • For immediate deactivation, ensure to enter termination date in BambooHR on the same day as the termination.

  • If an employee remains active longer than expected, verify the termination date configuration in BambooHR.

Example:

  • Employee: John Smith

  • Termination date set: Today

  • Status in TeamOhana: Active until 11:59 PM (company timezone)

This behavior is expected and based on BambooHR’s API rules.
